Thoughts on Silicon Valley Bank and Student Loans
Another bank faces collapse and the Federal government is stepping in to protect depositors. Some are blaming deregulation of small and medium sized banks. Some are comparing bailing out the bank to bailing out students for their loans. There is certainly a lot of finger pointing. We must realize the difference between a depositor in… Continue reading

You Must Step Forward to Get Ahead
That is obvious right? If you want to walk somewhere, you must put one foot in front of the other. The business application really hit home this week. I was thinking of the woman I had worked with that never went beyond on-the-job-training (OJT). She had been to college for a couple of years. She… Continue reading

How I Catch Mistakes in My Bookkeeping
I do my own books for three small businesses. One is a real estate business that my son and I own. We use the business for commission income when we buy/sell real estate. Those events typically happen a few times per year. In January, I was wondering if I needed to prepare any W2 forms.… Continue reading

Do You Have the Entrepreneur Skillset?
My wife and I were helping our son while his wife is away on a business trip. The kids are up at 7:00 and at school or daycare by 8:00. I was surprised that the kids could get ready so fast. My son has to take one child to school. His wife takes the other… Continue reading

Marketing: What Is the Key to Practice Growth?
I was talking with a colleague during a break at a seminar. He was still enjoying his practice, but not getting the financial rewards he wanted. I mentioned marketing. He said, “We don’t do any marketing.” Hmmm. I suspect that he meant he didn’t do any advertising. Marketing goes well beyond advertising. Simply put, marketing… Continue reading

That seems to be a sound strategy. You spent years building a business. Now that you’ve achieved success, selling the business to someone else gives them a profitable business and gives you a nest egg for retirement. What is fair? How much is your business worth? The short and correct answer is that your business… Continue reading

What If You Could Get a 10-100 Times Return on Your Tuition?
Can you imagine getting a 10-times return on your investment in your education? For investments we think in terms of percentages. If I get a 10% return, I expect to earn $10 per year for every $100 invested. A 10 times return would be $10 earned for every dollar invested. That is my goal with… Continue reading

Marketing Wants vs Needs
Do you spend a lot of time and money marketing to people who really need your goods or services? That can be very frustrating for one simple reason: People buy what they want not what they need. Healthcare is a great example. Many people are addicted to sugar. They are obese. They need to exercise… Continue reading

How Do Physical Laborers Become Wealthy?
It is always fun to hear about a mechanic or a maid who leaves over a million-dollar estate to a college or charity. How do they do it? In every case, they do what most people won’t. They work long hours. They often work multiple jobs. They live below their means. They invest and allow… Continue reading

Do People Get Rich Because of Hard Work?
There is an idea going around that people who do physical labor “actually do all the work” that creates wealth. The next step in the argument is people don’t get rich by working hard. I agree with the idea of three levels of work: 1) physical, 2) mental, 3) spiritual. The people swinging hammers are… Continue reading
